Can AI draft a chat reply that actually sounds like your team?

Chat replies are all about tone. The same message can read as friendly or cold depending on a word or two, and every team has its own unwritten style, how casual, how many emoji, how blunt. This is where AI drafting gets interesting, because tone is exactly the thing it finds hardest.

The task

Draft a reply in a channel that fits the conversation and matches the team’s usual voice, ready to send with minimal editing.

By hand vs. with AI

By hand: for most replies, you just type them, 1-6 minutes depending on how delicate the message is.

With AI: ask for a draft (ideally after showing it a few real messages from the channel so it learns the tone), then edit. 2-4 minutes for a longer or trickier reply.

The honest catch: this is a small-margin task

For short, easy replies, AI is often slower, not faster. Prompting and editing a one-liner takes longer than just typing it. Where it genuinely helps:

• Longer replies that need structure (explaining a decision, answering several questions at once).
• Delicate replies where you’re stuck on how to phrase something diplomatically, here the value is less about time saved and more about getting unstuck.

The tone problem is real: from a cold start, AI tends to sound too formal for casual team chat. The fix is feeding it examples of how your channel actually talks, but that setup only pays off if you reuse it.

Why we’re testing this one honestly

This is a task where the honest answer might be “AI often doesn’t save time here”, and that’s worth publishing. A calculator that only ever says “AI saves time!” isn’t trustworthy. Showing where it doesn’t help is exactly what makes the numbers on the tasks where it does help believable.
